Fighting For Life in the Ninth

An estimated forty-eight million babies have died through abortion in the United States since the passage of Roe v. Wade on January 22, 1973! Many have died through the heinous procedure of partial birth abortion. A ban on partial birth abortion was finally passed by our congress and signed by President Bush, but this ban, as well as many other attempts by individuals and legislators to rid this country of the scourge of abortion, is now threatened by the possible passage of a bill called The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA).
This bill is being pushed with fervor and unlimited financial backing by the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, the National Organization of Women (N.O.W.) NARAL: Pro-Choice America, the National Abortion Federation, and others.
A new local group, Fighting for Life in the 9th (District) has been formed to combat the passage of the legislation. Bill Haywood, chairman of the organization which began in a group of ministers concerned with pending legislation, states that the group wants to inform citizens in the 9th District of the dangers of FOCA, and ask for citizens to take action against it.
If passed, the Freedom of Choice Act will threaten all pro-life legislation thus achieved over many years of hard work. Victoria Cobb, president of the Family Foundation of Virginia sates that if the bill becomes law it “…will overturn forty years of legal precedent; undermine a state’s right to monitor the health and safety of its citizens; and harm, not just the unborn, but women who are forced to make difficult decisions in trying circumstances.” She continues, “Unknown to many is that this extreme over-reach will not only repeal laws, but it will also give a woman the right to sue the state if she believes a state law created to monitor the abortion procedure impedes her new unrestricted access to abortion at all stages in all situations.”
According to the American Center for Law and Justice some of the effects that this bill will have if passed are the following:
* Parental notification or involvement laws in 44 states and virtually all other restrictions on abortion at the state level would be eliminated.
* Federal limits on abortion funding would be struck down.
* Millions of our tax dollars could go via government grants to Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion business – which means you’ll be funding more abortions than ever through your taxes.
* Estimates indicate that as many as 125,000 more babies will be killed every year under this so-called “Freedom of Choice”.
In addition, Fighting for Life in The 9th adds to the above the following:
* All informed consent laws would be overturned.
* All laws requiring a waiting period before abortions would be eliminated
* The Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 would be reversed.
* Religiously affiliated hospitals would be forced to perform abortions as long as they operate.
* Military hospitals would now be required to provide abortion procedures.
* Health insurance for federal employees would have to cover abortion.
* Doctors, nurses, and hospitals that conscientiously object to abortion would no longer be protected from lawsuits.
On July 17, 2007, Barack Obama, campaigning for the presidency before the Planned Parenthood Action Fund stated, “The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing that I’d do.” Now Barack Obama is the President of the United States, and with all the pressure on him to keep his campaign promises, he will, without a shadow of a doubt, sign this bill into law if it reaches his desk.
The time for citizens to rise up and fight against this devastating bill is now! We must contact our legislators! Sadly, Rick Boucher of our 9th District and James Moran of the 8th District are co-sponsors of this bill. Rick Boucher has a 100% pro-abortion record!
It is time for us to call Rick Boucher’s office and tell him that this bill does not represent the values of most of us in the ninth district, and that we want life – not death for our unborn babies!
Paul Bufford from Abingdon Bible Church stated, “We are not only fighting in the ninth district, but we are also fighting in the ninth inning. Time may be running out.”
Please contact Rick Boucher, as well as Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner and let them know that you want them to vote against this bill, and ask Rick Boucher to withdraw his support of this bill. Rick’s DC Office: 202-225-3861, Abingdon Office: 276-628-1145; Pulaski Office: 540-980-4310
